Hello! My name is Mrs. Emily Kegley. I have worked for Milwaukee Public Schools since 2005. I started my teaching career here at Greenfield Bilingual School. I have taught several grades including 3rd, 5th, 1st, and 2nd grade. I earned my teacher’s license and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature at Marquette University. Later, I earned a master’s degree in Reading and my Literacy Coach license through Concordia University.
Teaching has always been a passion for me. When I was a little girl, I used to play school all the time and I dreamt of becoming a teacher. I had wonderful teachers growing up and we created so many memories that I can still share today. I really enjoy working with children and seeing them excel in their learning. I am looking forward to creating an educational yet fun experience for my students. I hope that I help my students create memories that will inspire them to become future educators. Mrs. Kegley |

Welcome to Second Grade Room 28
Welcome back to school! My name is Mrs. Emily Kegley and I will be your child’s teachers for the school year. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. In this letter you will find important information about the 2019-2020 school year. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me before school and/or after school at 902-8265 or by email haugex@milwaukee.k12.wi.us.
School starts at 7:35am and dismissal is at 2:35pm. Breakfast is served at 7:35am and second grade lunch time is 11:00am right before recess.
Supplies:
Please check the supply list suggested for second grade. It is important that your child has all of these supplies by Friday, Sept 6th. Your child will also need to have pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue at home to complete homework assignments.
Reading:
Your child will be involved in small and whole class reading groups from 8:50am-10:20am. In addition, your child should read 10-15 minutes at home to himself/herself silently or out loud, to a parent or older brother/sister. A monthly reading log will be completed and handed in at the end of each month.
Spelling:
A list of spelling words will be sent home at the beginning of each week and the spelling tests are
on Fridays. Please practice daily.
Math:
Basic math facts of addition and subtraction will be emphasized and tested each month. Your child will benefit from addition and subtraction flashcard practice at home.
Homework:
Homework is very important. It gives practice on what was learned in the classroom and also helps your child develop responsibility. I give homework Monday thru Thursday, and it is usually limited to around 10-20 minutes per night. Homework should be completed on time. If there is a problem completing homework, please send a note. Please work with your child when necessary and check over his/her homework and reading log. Your child will receive an assignment notebook where he/she will write down the daily homework.
Classroom Rules:
Classroom rules are also very important. Our classroom follows PBIS; be respectful, be responsible, and be safe. The rules help maximize your child’s learning time.
*Behavior reports will be sent home weekly which will explain how your child’s behavior has been during the week, and if there are any academic concerns as well. Behavior reports will need to be signed by a parent and turned in each week.
I hope you and your child had a great summer and is ready for a new and exciting school year. It is really important that you are part of your child’s learning. You are always welcome in our classroom. Please let me know of any concerns you have about your child that will help me make him/her have a better learning experience.
