6th Grade Monolingual
Ms. Cornette

Five speakers of different races and cultural backgrounds engaged our 6th graders in a discussion about being a minority, dealing with racism/prejudice and what students can do to end the bullying behavior, seen everywhere in this country.

Josue  Davalos MATC Graduate

8th Grade Bilingual
Mr. Lopez
Ms. Begel

Josue  Davalos, is an undocumented MATC graduate who now works with Voces de la Frontera. He came to speak the 8th grade Bilingual class about his experience growing up in Wisconsin as an undocumented immigrant, his struggles in accepting that some people might not want him here, and what drove him to overcome his fear and anger regarding that to finish college and apply for DACA. It was REALLY inspiring!

La Puerta Publications

1st Grade Bilingual
Ms. Aviles, Ms. Velazquez, Ms. Begel
Greenfield Bilingual School 1st graders had a very “hoppy” time when the authors and illustrator of the children’s book “The Voyage of Che the Tree Frog” came to visit!! The visitors shared the story of Che, a tree frog from El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico who leaves his home in order to find a more exciting life, but finds that home is not always as boring as we think it is. Students were not only treated to a reading of the story by the author herself, but also learned about the rain forest, el Coquí and practiced hopping around like Che searching for yummy “moscas” to eat. The energy and creativity of the experience is one students, and staff, will remember for years to come!!

Darlene Junker retired MPS teacher

6th Grade Bilingual
Mr. Perez
Ms. Begel

Retired MPS teacher Darlene Junker speaks to Mr. Perez’s 6th grade class about becoming an Interior Designer. Here Ms. Junker does a mock interview with a “client” so the students could learn what kinds of questions a designer would ask upon meeting a client for the first time. Ms. Junker spoke to the students not only about what academic classes they will need to become an interior designer, but what soft skills they need in order to be successful in the field of interior designs and why those skills are equally important.

 Captain Matt from Alaska Airlines

3rd Grade Monolingual
Ms. Krueger
Ms. Begel

Captain Matt from Alaska Airlines visited Ms. Krueger’s 3rd graders to talk about life at 35,000 ft. Not only did he answer pressing questions like “How do pilots go to the bathroom?” but he also talked to the kids about how listening and decision making are two very important skills he needs to be a safe and successful airline pilot. He brought activity books that explained the parts of the airplane and every student received their own wings, making them all Junior Alaska Airlines pilots!

Dental Hygienist Geena LoPiparo

7th Grade Monolingual
Mr. Schallock
Ms. Begel

Dental Hygienist Geena LoPiparo visited Mr. Schallock’s 7th grade students and gave them the “down and dirty” about spending your life looking into people’s mouths and caring for teeth. Geena’s bright and shiny smile helped quell the fears our students reported having about going to the dentist. Along with talking to the students about how patience and an ability to put other’s needs before your own are essential skills in being a good hygienist, Geena also talked about the importance of self-care and keeping your own body healthy as skills needed to succeed in this industry. Geena not only left the students with their own toothbrushes, but also with a deeper understanding and appreciation for life in the dental field.

Substance Abuse Counselor Margaret Underhill

Picture

5th Bilingual
Ms. Rolbiecki
Ms. Begel

Substance Abuse Counselor Margaret Underhill was at Greenfield today to talk to 5th grade students about the emotional, but much needed, work of a substance abuse counselor. Mrs. Underhill emphasized that not JUST listening, rather ACTIVE listening is the key in being a helpful and productive substance abuse counselor. Along with advising the students on what they can do if they know someone who may be suffering from substance abuse, Mrs. Underhill left them with a better understanding of why people may turn to substance abuse and what is the most rewarding part of being thig type of counselor. Ask one of Mrs. Rolbiecki’s students for the answer!
